A ray of light travelling in air enters obliquely into water. Does the light ray bend towards the normal or way from the normal ? Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When a light ray travels from a rarer medium (air) to a denser medium (water), the light ray will bend towards the normal. The speed of the light ray decreases as it moves from an optically rarer medium like water, hence it bends towards or closer to the normal.

A ray of light travelling in air enters obliquely into water. Does the light ray bend towards the normal or away from the normal? Why?

Why do we see violet light ray bending the most?

The refractive of three media are given below : {:("Medium",A,B,C),("Refractive index",1.65,1.71,1.47):} A light ray travels from medium A to medium B and another light ray travels from medium B to medium C. In which case does (a) the refracted ray bend towards the normal (b) the speed of light will be more.
