Explain, Why conversion of chromate ion to dichromate ion is not a redox reaction ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The oxidation state of Cr in `CrO_(4)^(2-) and Cr_(2) O_(7)^(2-) ` is + 6 as shown below :
`CrO_(4)^(2-) x _ 4 ( -2) = - 2 `
x - 8 = - 2
x = + 6
`Cr_(2)O_(7)^(2-) 2x + 7 (-2) = - 2`
2x - 14 = - 2
x = + 6
Since the conversion of chromate ion to dichromate ion does not involve any change in oxidation number, it is not considered as a redox reaction
