Freshwater sponges (e.g. Spongilla) reproduce asexually by forming gemmules. A gemmule is a small spherical structure with a central area of archaeocytes (totipotent cells in sponges) surrounded by a protective covering having spicules. It has a small. opening to outside called micropyle. Under favourable conditions, the archaeocytes come out of gemmule, divide and give rise to new sponges.
