Verified by Experts

Sporopollenin is a chemical substance which forms the hard outer layer, exine, of the pollen grains. It is one of the most resistant organic material. It can withstand high temperatures, strong acids and alkali. No enzyme can degrade sporopollenin. Pollen grains are preserved as fossils because of sporopollenin.
