Self-incompatibilty is the genetic mechanism that prevents self pollen (either from the same flower of the plant or from different flowers of the same plant) from fertilising the ovules by inhibiting pollen germination or pollen tube growth in the pistil. This occurs due to the presence of similar self sterile genes, e.g., tobacco, potato, crucifers.
