(i) Placenta is a structure produced by the fusion of extraembryonic membrane and uterine endometrium of mother for the purpose of physiological exchange of food and oxygen.
(ii) It also functions as an excretory organ of the foetus as it removes metabolic wastes.
(iii) It provides immunity to the foetus and also functions as an endocrine gland to secrete placental hormones.
