What is the role of acrosome in fertilisation?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The sperm head contains an oval haploid nucleus, the anterior part of which is capped by structure called Acrosome.
The acrosome secretes enzymes that help dissolve the egg barriers during fertilisation. The sperm Iysins present in acrosome include hyaluronidase, corona penetrating enzyme and acrosin. They digest zona pellucida and corona radiata and help the sperm to enter the egg for fertilisation.
