According to the law of independent assortment, when two pairs of traits are combined in a hybrid, segregation of one pair of a character is independent to that of the other pair of character at the time of gamete formation.
These factors are randomly rearranged in the offspring producing both parental and new (hybrid) combination of characters. The Punnett square can be used to understand the independent segregation of the two pairs of genes during meiosis.
The law was proposed by Mendel, based on the results of dihybrid crosses, where inheritance of two traits were considered simultaneously.
