The significance of crossing over is as follows:
(i) Crossing over produces recombinations (new gene combinations, which causes variations (the raw material in the formation of new species).
(ii) Useful recombinations produced by crossing over are used in producing new varieties of plants and animals in breeding programmes. (iii) It is used for preparing linkage maps or determining location of genes in chromosomes.
