Okazaki fragments are formed during DNA replication. The process of strand elongation occurs in opposite directions, as the two strands of the DNA are antiparallel.
On the leading strands, a continuous synthesis of new strand occurs while on the other strand (6-3 strand) discontinuous synthesis occurs. These discontinuous pieces of new DNA strands are called Okazaki fragments which are later joined by DNA ligase to form the continuous strand.
