DNA fingerprinting (also called DNA typing or DNA profiling) is a technique of determining nucleotide sequences of certain areas of DNA which are unique to each individual. This technique was developed by Alec Jeffreys in 1984 and is based on the fact that DNA constitution of an individual carries some specific sequences of nucleotides that repeate many times in a genome.
These sequences are VNTRs (Variable Number Tandem Repeats) or minisatellites. VNTRs vary from person to person, hence are used as genetic markers for identification purposes in forensic investigations, solve paternity disputes, etc.
