Why is inbreeding considered a harmful practice?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Breeding between the animals of the same breed for 4-6 generations is called inbreeding. It increases homozygosity, which can increase the chances of offspring being affected by deleterious or recessive traits. This usally leads to at least a temporary decrease or even permanent loss of biological fitness of a population or organism (called inbreeding depression), which is the ability of an organism or population to survive and reproduce.
