Decomposers

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The decomposers are microorganisms such as certain bacteria and fungi which feed on dead organic matter by secreting digestive enzymes (plant and animal origin both). These are also called saprophytes or mineralisers. Moulds and mushrooms are the largest decomposers of the forest ecosystem.

By taking an example of any ecosystem arrange the functions given below in correct sequence. (i) Heterotrophs die and accumulate as organic material. (ii) Heterotrophs consume autotrophs. (iii) Autotrophs convert inorganic material. (iv) Decomposers decompose organic material (v) Nutrients are released in the soil and reused by autotrophs.

Assertion: Herbivores are also called as key industry animals because they convert plant matter into animal matter. Reason: Decomposers play a pivotal role in the ecosystem and they indirectly support the producers.

Fragmentation, leaching and catabolism are some of the important steps of decomposition. Study the following statements I , ii and iii regarding these and select the correct option. (i) Detritivores (e.g., earthworm) breakdown detritus into smaller particles. (ii) Water soluble inorganic nutrients go down into soil horizon and get precipitated as unavailable salts. (iii) Decomposers (e.g., bacteria and fungi) secrete digestive enzymes and degrade detritus into simpler inorganic substances.
