What is the common household source of `CFC_s`? How these gases affect the ozone layer?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

CFCs are widely used as refrigerants. When they are discharged, they move upward and reach the stratosphere. In stratosphere, UV rays act on them releasing Cl atoms. Cl degrades ozone, releasing molecular oxygen. Cl atoms are not consumed in this reaction. Hence, once CFCs are added to the stratosphere, they have permanent and continuous effects on ozone levels.
