Why is gene encoding for Cry protein inserted into a crop plant?

cry gene isolated from bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis codes for a toxic insecticidal protein. This protein encoding gene is transferred to plants (like brinjal, cotton, etc) to develop the natural pest resistance plants against many insect larvae. When ingested by the target it gets converted to its active form in the alkaline pH of their gut. The toxin binds to the epithelial cells of surface of mid gut, creating pores causing swelling and eventual death of insect.
