An object of mass 1 kg travelling in a straight line with a velocity of 10 m`s^(-1)` collides with and sticks to a stationary wooden block mass 5 kg.Then they both move off together in the same straight line.Calculate the total momentum just befor the impact and just after the impact.Also,calculate the velocity of the combined object.

Total momentum just before the impact `(m_(1)+m_(2))v`
(1+5)v=6v kg m`s^(-1)` /…………..(2)
By conservation of momentum .
6v=10 [From (2)and (1)]
`Thereforev=(10)/(6)=(5)/(3)ms^(-1)`...........(3)
Total momentum just after impact Total momentum before impact is
10 kg `ms^(-1)` Total momentum after impact is.
10 kg `ms^(-1)` .velocity of the combined oject is
`(5)/(3)ms^(-1)`
