Two children are at opposite ends of an aluminium rod. One strikes the end of the rod with a stone. Find the ratio of time taken by the sound waves in air and in aluminium to reach the second child. Take velocity of sound in aluminium equal to 6420 m`s^(-1)` stand velocity of sound in air as 346 ms.)

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let the length of the aluminium rod be 1 m
Let `t_(1)` be the time taken by the sound to travel through distance l in air,
`t_(1)=("distance")/("Speed")=(1)/(v_("sir"))`…………(1)
Let `t_(2)` be the time taken by the sound to travel through distance l in aluminium rod,
`t_(2)=("distance")/("speed")=(l)/(v_(al))`...........(2)
From (1) and (2)
`(t_(1))/(t_(2))=(6420 ,s^(-1))/(346 ms^(-1))=18.55`

Two rods, one of iron and another of aluminium of equal length and equal cross-sections are connected with each other. The free end of the iron rod is kept at 100" "^(@)C and the free end of aluminium rod is kept at 0" "^(@)C . If thermal conductivity of aluminium is four times that of iron, find the temperature of their contact surface in the thermal steady state.

A vibrating string of certain length l under a tension T resonates with a mode corresponding to the first overtone (third harmonic ) of an air column of length 75 cm inside a tube closed at one end. The string also generates 4 beats//s with a tuning fork of frequency n . Now when the tension of the string is slightly increased the number of beats reduces to 2 per second. Assuming the velocity of sound in air to 340 m//s , the frequency n the tuning fork in H_(Z) is (a) 344 (b) 336 (c ) 117.3 (d) 109.3

A stationary observer receives sound from two identical tuning forks, one of which approaches and the other one receded with the same speed (much less than the speed of sound). The observer hears 2 beats/sec. The oscillation frequency of each tuning fork is v_(0)= 1400Hz and the velocity of sound in air is 350m/s. The speed of each tuning fork is close to
