A person has a hearing range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. What are the typical wavelength of sound waves in air corresponding to these two frequencies? Take the speed of sound in air as 344 `ms^(-1)`

Text Solution

Here, v = 344 `ms^(-1)` frequencies `v_(1)` = 20 Hz, `v_(2)` kHz = 20000 Hz.
The relation between speed (v), wavelength (`lambda`) and frequency (V) of a wavelength (`lambda`) and frequency (v) of a wave is v=v`lambda`
`therefore lambda=(u)/(v)`
Wavelength (`lambda`) of sound wave corresponding of frequency 20 Hz.
`lambda_(1)=(u)/(v_(1))=(344)/(20)=17.2m,` ...........(1)
Wavelength (`lambda`) of sound waves corresponding of frequency 20000Hz.
`lambda_(2)=(u)/(v_(2))=(344)/(20000)`=0.0172m.
Wavelength corresponding to 20 Hz and 20 kHz are respectively 17.2 m qand 0.0172m.
