A sonar device on a submarine sends out ...

A sonar device on a submarine sends out a signal and receives an echo 5s later. Calculate the speed of sound in water, if the distance of the object from the submarine is 3625 m.

Text Solution

Here, t=5s: d = 3625 m, 2 d = `2xx3625` m
7250 m,v=?
The speed of sound v=`(2d)/(t)=(7250)/(5s)` The speed of sound in sea water is 1450 `ms^(-1)`?

An echo is heard after 0.8s, when a boy fires a cracker, 132m away from a tall building. Calculate the speed of sound?

A rocket is moving at a speed of 200 m s^(-1) towards a stationary target. While moving, it emits a wave of frequency 1000 Hz. Some of the sound reaching the target gets reflected back to the rocket as an echo. Calculate (1) the frequency of the sound as detected by the target and (2) the frequency of the echo as detected by the rocket.

A SONAR (sound navigation and ranging) uses ultrasonic waves to detect and locate objects under water. In a submarine equipped with a SONAR , the time delay between generation of a probe wave and the reception of its echo after reflection from an enemy submarine is found to be 77.0s. What is the distance of the enemy submarine ? (Speed of sound in water = 1450 ms^(-1)) .

A sonometer wire under tension of 64 N vibrating in its fundamental mode is in resonance with a vibrating tuning fork. The vibrating portion of the sonometer wire has a length of 10 cm and mass of 1 kg. The vibrating tuning fork is now moved away from the vibrating wire with a constant speed and an observer standing near the sonometer hears one beat per second. Calculate the speed with which the tuning fork is moved, if the speed of sound in air is 300 m/s.
