In an .aqua regia. quiz competition the quiz master asked one of the teams to name the two hardest substances one of which is naturally occurring and the other one is manmade. As none of the teams could give the answer, he gave a clue that both the substances are used for cut-ting glass and drilling rocks and contain one common element. Then one of the teams gave the answer. What could be the right answer?

Diamond and silicon carbide are the two hardest substances known. Diamond occurs naturally (one is diamond and the other is silicon carbide) as it is obtained by the reaction between carbon and silicon. The common element present in diamond and silicon carbide is carbon.
