Mercury is used in thermometer because of the following reasons.
(i) It is a shiny viscous liquid.
(ii) It has low thermal expansion, that is, with the increase in temperature, the increase in volume of mercury is less compared to other liquids.
(iii) It does not stick to the glass surface because of weak adhesive force between glass and mercury.
