Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing agent. It reacts with iron to form ferric oxide. Ferrosilicon, an alloy of iron is less reactive when compared to iron and does not react with nitric acid. Thus, the redistillation process is carried out in a ferrosilicon vessel.
