Why is wood charcoal considered to be an excellent household fuel?

When wood burns, most of the gases and tars present in wood vaporize and charcoal remains. Charcoal is almost 100% carbon and burns with a red glow and leaves very little flame or smoke. Charcoal is a good fuel that burns easily and cleanly in the presence of adequate supply of air.
