Card is drawn from a pack of 52 cards. A persons bets that it is a spade or an ace. What are the odds against him of winning this bet?

Text Solution

Number of cards which are spade or ace = 13 + 4 - 1 = 16
So, probability of the card being a spade or an ace = `(16)/(52) = (4)/(13)`
Hence, odds in favour is 4 : 9.
Therefore, odds against him of winning the best is 9 : 4.
