Why do Zr and Hf exhibit similar properties?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Zirconium (Zr, Z = 40) belongs to second series of d-block transition elements and Hafnium (Hf, Z = 72) belongs to third series of d-block transition elements. These show similar chemical and physical properties because they have similar atomic radii (Zr = 159 pm and Hf = 156 pm) due to lanthanoid contraction.
