HVZ reaction : This is also known as Hell Volhard-Zelinsky reaction. Carboxylic acids having an a-hydrogen are halogenated at the `alpha`-position on treatment with chlorine or bromine in the presence of small amount of red phosphorus to give `alpha`-halocarboxylic acids. The reaction is known as Hell Volhard-Zelinsky (HVZ) reaction.
`RCH_(2)COOH underset((ii) H_(2)O) overset((i) X_(2)//"Red phosphorus")to underset(alpha-"Halocarboxylic acid")(R-underset(X)underset(|)(C)H-underset(X=Cl,Br)(COOH))`
