The Ozone layer absorbs 97 to 99 per cent of the Sun .s medium frequncy ultraviolet rays , which otherwise would potentially damage exposed life forms near the surface .the ozone molecule is unstable and when ultraviolet light hits ozone it splits into a molecule of `O_(2)` and individual atom of oxygen .
