The function of yolk are
(i) It provides nutrition to the developing embryo.
(ii) Cleavage, i.e. the division of cells in the early embryo mostly depends on the amount of yolk in the egg.
The cleavage can be holoblastic (total cleavage) or meroblastic (partial cleavage).
