Write a short note on nitrogenous bases.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nitrogenous bases are heterocyclic compounds in which the rings contain both nitrogen and carbon atoms. There are two types of nitrogenous bases
(i) Purines (with double rings) adenine and guanine
(ii) Pyrimidines (with single ring) cytosine, uracil and thymine.
Out of the pyrimidines, cytosine is common for both DNA and RNA while thymine is present only in DNA. Uracil is present in RNA in place of thymine.
