On reaction with `Cl_(2)` , phosphorus forms two types of halides 'A' and 'B'. Halide A' is yellowish-white powder but halide 'B' is colourless oily liquid. Identify A and B and write the formulae of their hydrolysis products.

Phosphorus on reaction with `Cl_(2)` forms two types of halides A and B. Therefore, these halides must be `PCI_(5)`, and `PCI_(3)` . Since, halide A is yellowish-white solid but halide B is a colourless oily liquid thus, A is `PCI_(5)` and B is `PCI_(3)`.
`P_(4) +10 CI_(2) rarr 4 PCI_(5)`, (yellowish-white solid)
`P_(4) +6CI_(2) rarr 4PCI_(3)` (oily liquid)
When .A. and .B. are hydrolysed.
(i) `underset("pentachloride")underset("Phosphorus")underset((B))(PCI_(5))+4H_(2)O rarrunderset("acid")underset("Ortho-phosphoric")(H_(3)PO_(4))+5HCI`
(ii) `underset("trichloride")underset("Phosphorus")underset((B))(PCI_(3))+3H_(2)O rarrunderset("acid")underset("Phosphorus")(H_(3)PO_(3))+3HCI`
