Which compound in each of the following ...

Which compound in each of the following pairs will react faster in `S_(N)2` reaction with `OH^(-)` and why?
`CH_(3)Br or CH_(3)I`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CH_(3)Br and CH_(3)I` both are primary halogen compounds. The reactivity will depend upon the size of the halogen atom. Iodine is a better leaving group because of larger size, therefore, `CH_(3)I` will react faster than `CH_(3)Br`.
