Why does aniline not undergo Fidel crafts reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Aniline being a Lewis base forms a complex with `AlCl_(3)`, a Lewis acid. As a result, nitrogen of aniline becomes positively charged and acts as a strong deactivating group for electrophilic substitution reacts. Consequently, aniline does not undergo Friedel-Crafts reaction.
`underset("Aniline (Lewis base)")(C_(6)H_(5) overset(..)(N)H_(2)) + underset(("Lewis acid"))(AlCl_(3)) rarr underset(("Complex"))([C_(6)H_(5)NH_(2)]^(+) [AlCl_(3)]^(-))`
