Write the increasing order of thermal st...

Write the increasing order of thermal stability of hydrides of Gr-16 elements.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The thermal stability of hydrides of group 16 elements is directly proportional to the bond dissociation enthalpy of H-E bond.
On moving down the group, bond dissociation energy decreases because bond length increases and hence, E-H bond breaks easily.
Thus, the thermal stability of hydrides of group 16 clements decreases down the group. Hence, the order of thermal stability is
`H_2O gt H_2S gt H_2Se gt H_2Te gt H_2Po`
