There is a large difference between the melting and boiling points of oxygen and sulphur. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The melting and boiling point increases with an increase in atomic number down the group. The large difference between the melting and boiling points of oxygen and sulphur-may be explained on the basis of their atomicity. Oxygen exists as diatomic molecule (`O_2`) which may be held together by weak van der Waals. forces and can be broken casily even by small temperatures whereas sulphur exists as octa-atomic molecules having strong S-S bonds and hence, larger temperature is required to break these strong S-S bonds.
