SF6 is inert towards hydrolysis. Why?...

`SF_6` is inert towards hydrolysis. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In `SF_6`, the six F atoms sterically protect the sulphur atom from attack by water due to steric hindrance. Further, F does not have d-orbitals to accept the clectrons donated by `H_2O` molecules. As a result of these two reasons, `SF_6` does not undergo hydrolysis.
