How can you convert ethanol to ethene ?...

How can you convert ethanol to ethene ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ethanol can be converted to ethane via dehydration process (i.e removal of a molecule of water ).On treatment with a protic acid such as `H_(2)SO_(4) or H_(3)PO_(4)` or catalyst such as anhydrous `ZnCl_(2) or Al_(2)O_(3)` , ethanol forms ethene .
`underset ("Ethanol")(CH_(3)-CH_(2)OH) overset (H_(2)SO_(4)) underset (443 K) to underset ("Ethene") (CH_(2)=CH_(2)+H_(2)O) `
