Calculate the `Z_(eff)` felt by a 2p electron of the nitrogen atom.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Electron configuration of nitrogen atom is `1s^(2)`
There are 4 other electron in (2s2p) group.
Screening constant, `sigma` for 2p electron=` 4xx 0.35 + 2x 0.85= 3.10`
Therefore, `Z_(eff)` felt by 2p electron = `Z_(eff)= Z- sigma= 7.0- 3.10== 3.90`
