In the following question, an Assertion ...

In the following question, an Assertion (A) is followed by a corresponding Reason (R). Use the following keys to choose the appropriate answer.
Assertion : `BF_3` is a weaker Lewis acid than `BCl_3`.
Reason : In `BF_3` molecule, back bonding `(p pi-p pi)` is stronger than in `BCl_3`. : If both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)., If both (A) and (R) are correct, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)., If (A) is correct, but (R) is incorrect., If both (A) and (R) are incorrect.

A

If both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).

B

If both (A) and (R) are correct, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

C

If (A) is correct, but (R) is incorrect.

D

If both (A) and (R) are incorrect.

The correct Answer is:
A

In `BF_3`, the vacant p-orbitals of B-atom coordinates with lp.s of F-atom. Therefore, lp.s availability is reduced. In `BF_3` molecule, there is (2p-2p) overlap resulting in stronger `(p pi-p pi)` back bonding. Whereas in `BCl_3` there is (2p-3p) overlap resulting in less stronger `(p pi-d pi)` back bonding.
