A compound contains atoms of three elements A, B, and C. If the oxidation number of A is +2, B is +5 and that of C is–2, the possible formula of the compound is

A

`A_3 (BC_4)_2`

B

`A_3(B_4C)_2`

C

`ABC_2`

D

`A_3(BC_3)_2`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
A

Sum of oxidation number of all the elements in the molecular formula of any compound is zero. Putting the oxidation number of all the elements in the molecular formula of all the compounds, we find that in molecular `A_3(BC_4)_2` the sum ofoxidation number of all the elements comes out to zero
`3 xx (+2) + 2 xx (+5 + 4 xx -2) = 0`
