Assertion : F atom has a less negative election gain enthalpy than Cl atom.
Reason : Additional electrons are repelled more effectively by 3p electrons in Cl atom than by 2p electrons in F-atom.

A

If both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation of Assertion

B

If both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct explanation of Assertion

C

If Assertion is correct , but Reason is incorrect

D

If both Assertion and Reason are incorrect

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

F has slightly less electrons affinity than chlorine because Fhas very small atomic size (only two shells). Hence there is a tendency of electron-electron repulsion, which results in less evolution of energy in the formation of F ion.
