The correct decreasing order of the reaction rates of the following compounds with HBr is:

A

`I gt II gt III gt IV`

B

`IV gt III gt II gt I`

C

`II gt I gt III gt IV`

D

`IV gt III gt I gt II`

The correct Answer is:
A

The positive charge that develops onbenzylic C in this `S_(N)1` reactionis most effectively delocalised by (QMe) group (+R and -I). The (p-`NO_(2)`) group withdraws electron density fromthe ring by-I and -R. (p-Cl) group withdraws electrons from the ring by -?I only. More EDG (eg, -rOMe) stabilises positive charge on the benzyl C atom, whereas EWG (eg, - `NO_2`, -Cl).destabilises the positive charge. Hence, the reactivity order is: `I gt II gt III gt IV`
