The correct order of decreasing acidity ...

The correct order of decreasing acidity for I, II, III and IV is-

A

`IV gt III gt I gt II`

B

`II gt IV gt I gt III`

C

`I gt II gt III gt IV`

D

`III gt I gt II gt IV`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

Electron withdrawing groups increase the acidity ofphenols. Since-`NO_2` group is amuchmore powerful electron with following group man CI, therefore (III). Further, electron donating groups.decrease the acidity of phenols. Since -`OCH_3` group is a more powerful electron donating group than `CH_3` group, therefore, p-methyiphenol (II) is a stronger acid than p-methoxyphenol (IV). Combining the two trends together, the overall acidity ofthe fourphenols decreases in the order: `III gt I gt II gt IV`
