Assertion : Bromination of phenol takes place even in the absence of Lewis acid.
Reason : In phenol, OH group attached to benzene ring has highly deactivating effect.

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

Halogenation of benzene takes place in the presence of Lewis acid such as `FeBr^3` which polarises the halogen molecule. In case of phenol, thepolarisation of bromine molecule takes place even in the absence of Lewis acid. It is due to the highly activating effect of OH group attached to the benzene ring.

Assertion: Dipolemoment ofphenol is smaller than that of methanol. Reason: In phenol C-O bond is less polar due to electron withdrawing effect of the benzene ring whereas in methanol, C-O bond Is more polar due to electron releasing effect of CH_3 group.

Phenol exhibit resonance. Predict the directive influence of -OH group in Benzene ring.

Assertion: Arylhalides cannot be-prepared by replacement of hydroxyl group of phenol by halogen atom. Reason : Phenols react with halogen acids violently

The reaction given below is an example of Friedel-Craft alkylation reaction. In number of cases of Friedel-Crafts alkylation, the final product is found to contain a rearranged alkyl group. Generally with stronger Lewis acid product is rearranged due to enough polarization of complex while with weak lewis acid no such effect is observed. Temperature also favours rearranged product. If we take FeCl_(3) in place of AICI_(3) in the above reaction, the product is
