A satellite is seen after every 8 hours ...

A satellite is seen after every `8` hours over the equator at a place on the earth when its sense of rotation is opposite to the earth. The time interval after which it can be seen at the same place when the sense of rotation of earth and satellite is same will be:

A

(a) 8 hours

B

(b) 12 hours

C

(c) 24 hours

D

(d) 6 hours

The correct Answer is:
C

Relative angular velocity when the particle are moving in same direction is
`omega_(1)+omega_(2)implies(omega_(1)+omega_(2))t=2pi`
`thereforeomega_(2)=(2pi)/(24)rad//sec,omega_(1)=(pi)/(6)`
When the particles are moving in the same direction then angular veloity becomes
`(omega_(1)-omega_(2))implies(omega_(1)-omega_(2))t=2pi`
By substituting `omega_(1)` and `omega_(2)` in equation we get `implies24hrs`

A satellite moves eastwards very near the surface of the Earth in equitorial plane with speed (v_(0)) . Another satellite moves at the same height with the same speed in the equatorial plane but westwards. If R =radius of the Earth and omega be its angular speed of the Earth about its own axis. Then find the approximate difference in the two time period as observed on the earth.

A satellite is to be placed in equatorial geostationary orbit around the earth for communication. (a) Calculate height of such a satellite. The earth has a radius of 6400 km. The inner core of 1000 km radius is solid. Outside it, there is a region from 1000 km to a radius of 3500 km which is in molten state. Then again from 3500 km to 6400 km the earth is solid. Only longitudinal (P) waves can travel inside a liquid. Assume that the P wave has a speed of 8 kms^(-1) in solid parts and of 5 kms^(-1) in liquid parts of the earth. An earthquake occurs at some place close to the surface of the earth. Calculate the time after which it will be recorded in a seismometer at a diametrically opposite point on the earth if wave travels along diameter ?

Two satellites of same mass m are revolving round of earth (mass M) in the same orbit of radius r. Rotational directions of the two are opposite therefore, they can collide. Total mechanical energy of the system (both satallites and earths) is (m lt lt M) :-

Consider two satellites A and B of equal mass m, moving in the same circular orbit of radius r around the earth E but in opposite sense of rotation and therefore on a collision course (see figure) (i). In terms of G,M_(e) m and r find the total mechanical energy E_(A)+E_(B) of the two satellite plus earth system before collision (ii). If the collision is completely inelastic so that wreckage remains as one piece of tangled material (mass=2m) find the total mechanical energy immediately after collision. (iii). Describe the subsequent motion of the wreckage.
