Brass has a tensile strength 3.5xx10^(8)...

Brass has a tensile strength `3.5xx10^(8) N//m^(2)`. What charge density on this material will be enough to break it by electrostatic force of repulsion? How many excess electrons per square `Å` will there then be? What is the value of intensity just out side the surface?

We know that electrostatic force on acharged conductor is given by `(dF)/(ds)=sigma^(2)/(2 epsilon_(0))`
So the conductor will break by this force if, `sigma^(2)/(2epsilon_(0)) gt` Breaking strength i.e., `sigma^(2) gt 2xx9xx10^(-12)xx3.5xx10^(8)` i.e. `sigma_("min")=(3sqrt(7))xx10^(-2)=7.94xx10^(-2)(C//m^(2))`
Now as the charge on an electron is `1.6xx10^(-19)C`. the excess electrons per `m^(2)=(7.9xx10^(-2))/(1.6xx10^(-19))=4.96xx10^(17)` And for square `Å(4.96xx10^(17))/10^(20)=4.96xx10^(-3)`
Futher as in case of a conductor near its surface `E=sigma/epsilon_(0)=(7.94xx10^(-2))/(9xx10^(-12))=8.8xx10^(9) V//m`

An ideal monoatomic gas is confined in a cylinder by a spring-loaded piston of cross-section 8.0xx10^-3m^2 . Initially the gas is at 300K and occupies a volume of 2.4xx10^-3m^3 and the spring is in its relaxed (unstretched, unompressed) state, fig. The gas is heated by a small electric heater until the piston moves out slowly by 0.1m. Calculate the final temperature of the gas and the heat supplied (in joules) by the heater. The force constant of the spring is 8000 N//m , atmospheric pressure is 1.0xx10^5 Nm^-2 . The cylinder and the piston are thermally insulated. The piston is massless and there is no friction between the piston and the cylinder. Neglect heat loss through lead wires of the heater. The heat capacity of the heater coil is negligible. Assume the spring to be massless.

Nazima is fly fishing in a stream. The tip of her fishing rod is 1.8 m above the surface of the water and the fly at the end of the string rests on the water 3.6 m away from her and 2.4 m from a point directly under the tip of the rod. Assuming that her string (from the tip of her rod to the fly) is taut, how much string does she have out (see the given figure)? If she pulls in the string at the rate of 5 cm per second, what will be the horizontal distance of the fly from her after 12 seconds?
