Langerhans desaibed the beta cells (within the islets of Langerhans) of the pancreas which produce insulin that affects the metabolism of glucose directly. Fat and protein are indirectly affected. After a meal the level of blood sugar rises eliciting the production of insulin which stimulates the absorption of glucose by the cells and helps in its conversion to glycogen. Insulin deficiency leads to high blood sugar levels and the disease caiJed diabetes mellitus.
