Distinction between pairs of compounds
Chlorobenzene `(C_(6)H_(5)Cl)` and chlorocyclohexane

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

chlorobenzene is a haloarene while chlorocyclohexane is a haloalkane.Since haloalkanes are more reactive than haloarenes, therefore, chlorocyclohexane undergoes hydrolysis on heating with aq. KOH

The above reaction mixture on acidification with dil. `HNO_(3)` followed by treatment with `AgNO_(3)` soluion forms a white ppt. of AgCl due to the formation of KCl during the hydrolysis with KOH (aq).
`K^(+)Cl^(-)+AgNO_(3)rarrunderset(("White ppt."))(AgCldarr)+K^(+)NO_(3)^(-)`
In contrast, chlorobenzene does not undergo hydrolysis to yield phenol and KCl under these conditions.

Therefore, acidification of the reaction mixture with dil. `HNO_(3)` followed by addition of `AgNO_(3)` does not produce a white ppt. of AgCl.
