This method is used for the preparation of some alkanes, alkenes and alkynes by the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of sodium or potassium solts of suitable acids.
(i)Alkanes `2R-COONa+2H_(2)Ooverset("electrolysis")(to)ubrace(R-R+2CO_(2))_("at anode")+ubrace(2NaOH+H_(2))_("at cathode")`
(ii) `underset(CH_(2)COONa)overset(CH_(2)COONa)(|" ")+2H_(2)Ooverset("electrolysis")(to)ubrace(C_(2)H_(4)+2CO_(2))_("at anode")+ubrace(2NaOH+H_(2))_("at cathode")`
(iii) Alkynes `underset("(or fumarate)")underset("Pot. maleate")underset(CHCOOK)overset(CHCOOK)(||" ")+2H_(2)Ooverset("electrolysis")(to)ubraceunderset("Acetylene ")(CH-=CH+2CO_(2))_("at anode")+ubrace(2KOH+H_(2))_("at cathode")`
