The reduction of aldehydes and ketones to the hydrocarbons having the same number of carbons by heating them with hydrazine and KOH or potassium tete. Butoxide in a high boiling solvent such as ethylene glycol is called Wolff-Kishner reduction, e.g.,
`R-underset(H)underset(|)(C)=Ounderset(-H_(2)O)overset(NH_(2),NH_(2))(to)R-CH=N.NH_(2)underset(453-473K)overset("KOH,glycol")(to)RCH_(3)+N_(2)`
`underset("Acetaldehyde")(CH_(3)-underset(H)underset(|)(C)=O)underset("glycol,"453-473)overset(NH_(2)NH_(2),KOH)(to)CH_(3)CH_(3)+N_(2)`
`underset("Acetone")(CH_(3)-underset(CH_(3))underset(|)(C)=O)underset(453-473K)overset(NH_(2)NH_(2),KOH," glycol")(to)underset("Propane")(CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(3))`
