Methylamine on treatment with `HNO_(2)(NaNO_(2)+"dil. HCl")` gives effervescence of `N_(2)` and produces methanol.
`CH_(3)NH_(2)+HNO_(2)rarrCH_(3)OH+N_(2)+H_(2)O`
Methylethylamine (sec. amine) does not give any effervescence of nitrogen but forms yellow coloured nitrosoamine.
